Democracy Prep Public Schools is currently seeking a Junior Accountant for a full-time position located in New York City. The candidate will join our Finance and Accounting team in our home office and will be a self-starter, highly motivated, independent thinker, display a strong sense of urgency and demonstrate the ability to prioritize responsibilities.

Democracy Prep Public Schools currently operates 22 tuition-free, high-performing schools in New York, New Jersey, Baton Rouge, Las Vegas, and San Antonio educating 7,200 citizen-scholars. Our mission is to educate responsible citizen-scholars for success in the college of their choice and a life of active citizenship.

Responsibilities

* Support reconciliation of general ledger accounts and maintenance of financial schedules.
* Assist in monthly bank reconciliations, journal entries and monitoring of cash flow statements.
* Provide backup to all areas of accounting including accounts receivable, accounts payable, payroll and financial reporting.
* Review the company's financial data to identify and resolve discrepancies.
* Work with external auditors to facilitate audit requests, prepare annual audit schedules and submissions.
* Ensure compliance with GAAP and maintain financial policies and procedures to support such compliance.
* Support the Senior Accountant in managing the day-to-day activities of the accounting and finance department.
* Perform ad hoc analysis and projects as needed.

Qualifications

* Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance a must.
* 3+ years of solid experience in non-profit or private sector accounting, with track record of progressive accounting responsibilities.
* Knowledge of GAAP accounting standards and procedures.
* Thoroughly proficient in Microsoft Excel, and experience with Intacct, FinancialEdge, Abila MIP or a similar accounting program.
* Commitment to timely task completion, with ability to establish work priorities and meet deadlines are essential.
* Strong attention to detail, while multi-tasking successfully.
* Solid verbal and written communication skills.
